Các ứng viên Việt Nam (học sinh lớp 8-10) phải vượt qua vòng hồ sơ, thi viết (Toán, Tiếng Anh, GAT - General Ability Test) và phỏng vấn.
Chính phủ Singapore ưu tiên những học sinh không chỉ giỏi học thuật mà còn có tiềm năng đóng góp cho xã hội đa văn hóa, thúc đẩy hợp tác ASEAN và phát triển bền vững.
Dưới đây là phần miêu tả chi tiết hơn cho từng tiêu chí. Mỗi tiêu chí được đánh giá qua học bạ, bài thi, phỏng vấn.

Academic excellence: xuất sắc học thuật

Tiêu chí này được thể hiện qua các việc sau
  • Phần sơ loại hồ sơ, dựa trên học bạ; những giải thưởng HSG không có vai trò quyết định.
  • Phần bài thi viết (Toán, tiếng Anh, GAT) là bài thi quan trọng nhất. Vòng thi này chọn ra chừng 30% thí sinh để đến vòng thi tiếp theo: phỏng vấn.
Bài thi được thiết kế phổ rộng về phạm vi và độ khó, giúp đo lường, đánh giá ứng viên từ nhiều hoàn cảnh, xuất phát khác nhau. Từ năm 2021 trở lại đây, tiêu chí đạt học bổng trung học không quá cao: có những người không quá giỏi vẫn được nhận học bổng.

Resilience & maturity: Sức bền bỉ và sự trưởng thành

Singapore tìm kiếm học sinh có khả năng vượt qua áp lực học tập cao và cuộc sống xa nhà (từ 14–16 tuổi). Tiêu chí này được đánh giá qua phỏng vấn: Ứng viên phải kể chuyện về thất bại cá nhân (ví dụ: thua cuộc thi, áp lực học lớp chuyên) và cách vượt qua, chứng tỏ sự kiên cường. Đối với học sinh Việt Nam, MOE ưu tiên những em từ gia đình trung bình (không quá giàu), thể hiện sự chín chắn qua trách nhiệm gia đình hoặc hoạt động tình nguyện. A*STAR nhấn mạnh resilience trong nghiên cứu khoa học, như kiên trì với thí nghiệm thất bại, hay một mục tiêu mà ứng viên kiên nhẫn theo đuổi.

Leadership potential: tiềm năng lãnh đạo

Ứng viên cần chứng minh khả năng dẫn dắt qua vai trò trong trường (chủ tịch hội học sinh, đội trưởng CLB) hoặc cộng đồng (tổ chức sự kiện từ thiện), hay dự án từ nhóm nhỏ. Trong phỏng vấn, câu hỏi kiểu "Bạn sẽ giải quyết xung đột nhóm thế nào?" kiểm tra kỹ năng lãnh đạo. MOE coi đây là yếu tố thúc đẩy "goodwill among ASEAN youth" – học sinh phải có tiềm năng làm cầu nối văn hóa. Với A*STAR, leadership thể hiện qua dự án nhóm khoa học hoặc mentor em nhỏ. Học sinh Việt Nam thường nổi bật nhờ kinh nghiệm lãnh đạo lớp chuyên, nhưng cần nhấn mạnh tác động xã hội (ví dụ: dẫn dắt chiến dịch môi trường địa phương).

Holistic development: phát triển toàn diện

Không chỉ học thuật, Singapore đánh giá sự cân bằng qua hoạt động ngoại khóa (CCA tương lai: thể thao, nghệ thuật, tình nguyện). Tiêu chí này phù hợp với triết lý giáo dục Singapore: "Develop cross-cultural skills and global outlook." Đối với Việt Nam, ưu tiên em có sở trường nghệ thuật hoặc thể thao (như cầu lông, bơi lội) để thích nghi nhanh với môi trường trường. A*STAR thêm yếu tố "interdisciplinary research" – em cần thể hiện sự kết hợp học thuật với sáng tạo thực tế.

Long-term commitment: cam kết dài hạn

Học bổng yêu cầu duy trì 4 năm với đánh giá hàng năm dựa trên kết quả học và hạnh kiểm. Ứng viên phải chứng minh cam kết qua phỏng vấn: "Bạn sẽ đóng góp cho Singapore sau tốt nghiệp thế nào?" (không bắt buộc bond, nhưng ưu tiên em thể hiện mong muốn học tiếp đại học Singapore hoặc làm việc R&D), thiên hướng về engineering. Với A*STAR, cam kết mạnh hơn với hướng khoa học – em cần kế hoạch nghề nghiệp rõ ràng (ví dụ: nghiên cứu AI cho ASEAN).

Adaptability: Khả năng thích nghi

Sống xa nhà ở môi trường kỷ luật cao (giờ giấc nghiêm ngặt, đa văn hóa), ứng viên cần chứng minh qua câu chuyện thích nghi thay đổi (chuyển trường, học online COVID). Phỏng vấn kiểm tra qua tình huống giả định: "Bạn sẽ xử lý homesickness thế nào?" Đối với Việt Nam, MOE đánh giá cao em từ tỉnh lẻ đã thích nghi Hà Nội/TP.HCM. A*STAR thêm yếu tố thích nghi với nghiên cứu thất bại. Lời khuyên: Thể hiện qua hoạt động du lịch hoặc CLB quốc tế.

Communication & confidence: giao tiếp và tự tin

Phỏng vấn hoàn toàn tiếng Anh (20-30 phút), kiểm tra khả năng diễn đạt rõ ràng, tự tin (không ấp úng, trả lời sâu). Tiêu chí này chiếm 30-40% quyết định cuối, qua viết essay thi và nói chuyện nhóm.

Chúng tôi ghi chép một số câu hỏi được sử dụng phổ biến trong các năm qua khi người Singapore phỏng vấn ứng viên Việt Nam. Mỗi câu kèm theo một vài phân tích ngắn, và mẫu tham khảo (không duy nhất).

Tell me about yourself.

A. Dụng ý: Ice-breaker, kiểm tra sự tự tin và khả năng tóm tắt trong 60–90 giây.
B. Tiêu chí: Đủ 4 phần: học thuật – thành tích – CCA – lý do xin học bổng.

Hi! My name is Nguyễn Minh Khang, I’m 15 and in grade 9 at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. Last year I ranked 2nd overall and won silver in the National Mathematics Olympiad. Outside class I’m captain of the school badminton team – we came 3rd in the city last month – and I volunteer every Sunday teaching English to primary kids. I’ve always admired how Singapore develops students in every area, so I believe this scholarship will help me become a well-rounded person and later contribute back to both Vietnam and Singapore.

Why do you want to study in Singapore?

There are three big reasons. First, I love that there’s no “main subject” and “minor subject” like in Vietnam – every subject and even CCA counts toward your grade. That fits me perfectly because I never want to give up sports or music. Second, living with students from ten ASEAN countries means I’ll learn new cultures every day. And third, when I see my seniors go straight to NUS, Cambridge or MIT after studying here, I know the foundation is incredibly strong. I want to become an AI engineer working on climate solutions for the Mekong Delta, and Singapore feels like the perfect launchpad.

What do you know about the Singapore education system? How is it different from Vietnam?

From what I researched, Singapore doesn’t have “chuyên Toán, chuyên Văn” from early secondary like Vietnam. Every student studies a broad range of subjects until O-Level, and CCA is compulsory and graded. There’s also much more emphasis on critical thinking, project work and presentations instead of just memorising for exams. I’m really excited about that because I want to develop both deep knowledge and soft skills at the same time.

Are you ready for boarding school life?

Yes, I think I’m quite ready. Last summer I joined a 3-week leadership camp in Đà Lạt with the same schedule – 5:30 wake-up, lights-out at 10 pm, shared dorm with 8 people. I also cook simple dishes every weekend for my family, so I’m comfortable using the boarding house kitchen. Of course I’ll miss my parents, but I’m excited to live with friends from Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand – the first few weeks will be busy making new friends and joining CCAs.

How will you handle homesickness or culture shock?

I already have a plan. The first month I’ll join at least two CCAs so I’m surrounded by people all the time. On Saturdays I want to cook Vietnamese food with my dorm mates – maybe teach them how to roll spring rolls. I’ll video-call my family every Wednesday and Sunday night, same time every week. Last year at a 2-week NUS camp I missed home a bit at first, but after three days I was totally fine – so four years is definitely doable.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

My biggest strength is time-management – I train badminton four evenings a week, keep top-3 grades and run the Environment Club. My weakness used to be perfectionism; I could spend hours on one Math problem until it’s perfect and then get stressed. Last year my teacher taught me the 80/20 rule and Pomodoro, and now I’m much better – I know when to move on and come back later with a fresh mind.

What subjects do you like most/least and why?

I love Math and Physics the most because I enjoy solving problems and seeing how things work in real life. Literature is a bit more challenging for me – sometimes I find it hard to analyse poems deeply. But I’m improving by reading English novels every week and discussing with my teacher, so it’s getting much better.

What are your career goals?

In the long term I want to become an AI researcher specialising in healthcare or climate solutions. Singapore has A*STAR, NUS and so many world-class labs – that’s exactly the environment I need to start real research early. After graduating I hope to work on projects that help the Mekong Delta region, maybe even start a company here with friends from different ASEAN countries.

Tell us about a challenge you faced and how you overcame it.

Last year I prepared for the National Physics Olympiad and captained the badminton city tournament in the same month. Two weeks before both events I caught a bad flu and missed almost one week of training and revision. Instead of panicking, I made a very detailed timetable, asked teammates to record training sessions, and studied Physics in the morning when my brain was fresh. In the end I still won silver in Physics and we came 3rd in badminton. That taught me that staying calm and planning carefully is way more effective than stressing out.

How will you contribute to Singapore/ASEAN community?

I’d love to organise a “Vietnam Day” once or twice a year – áo dài fashion show, traditional music, and phở tasting. I also want to continue my environment projects, maybe something about microplastics or salinity-resistant rice that can help the whole Mekong region. And when new ASEAN scholars arrive, I’ll be happy to be their buddy and help them settle in.

Do you plan to apply for Singapore citizenship in the future? (chỉ hỏi nam sinh)

Right now my full focus is on studying hard and making the most of the scholarship for the next 6–7 years. If one day I have the chance to contribute significantly to Singapore and Singapore welcomes me, then I would definitely be open to it. But for now I just want to be the best student I can be and make both my family and Singapore proud.

Why should we choose you over other candidates?

I believe I bring strong academics (national medals), proven leadership (captain of sports team and clubs), and most importantly, 100 % commitment to the whole journey – from 5:45 am wake-ups to overseas camps. I’m not just looking for a scholarship; I’m looking for a complete transformation, and I’m ready to give my very best every single day.

What do you think is the biggest difference between Vietnamese and Singaporean students?

From my short visit, Singaporean students ask “why” and challenge ideas much more freely in class, while Vietnamese students usually master the content deeply first. I think both approaches are valuable, and I want to combine them – deep knowledge plus the courage to speak up and think critically.

How do you manage stress during exam periods?

I exercise 30–40 minutes every day – usually badminton or running – because it really clears my mind. I also use the Pomodoro technique and make a revision timetable two months before exams. When I feel overwhelmed, I talk to my parents or close friends – just five minutes of talking helps a lot.

Tell us about a time you failed at something and what you learned.

In grade 8 I prepared very hard for the city English public-speaking contest but only came 4th. I was really disappointed. But when I watched the recording, I realised I spoke too fast and didn’t connect with the audience. So I joined Toastmasters Junior and practised every week. The next year I won 1st prize in the national competition. That failure taught me that feedback and consistent practice are more important than talent alone.

What do you know about National Service (NS) in Singapore? (chỉ hỏi nam sinh)

I understand that male Singapore citizens and PRs serve two years of National Service after JC or polytechnic. If I have the opportunity to become PR in the future and contribute significantly to Singapore, I’m completely willing to serve NS to give back to the country that gave me this amazing education.

How do you plan to balance academics and CCA in Singapore?

I already train badminton four evenings a week in Vietnam while keeping top grades, so I’m used to tight scheduling. In Singapore I’ll treat CCA as part of my official timetable from day one and use Sunday evenings for planning the whole week. Time management has always been my strength.

What will you do if you don’t get the scholarship?

I will continue studying IGCSE and A-Level in Vietnam and still aim for top universities like NUS, Cambridge or Ivy League – but Singapore is definitely my first choice because of the holistic education and ASEAN environment. Not getting the scholarship won’t stop me, but getting it would make the journey much faster and richer.

What will you miss most about Vietnam, and how will you stay connected to your culture?

Definitely my mom’s phở on Sunday mornings! I’ve already asked her to teach me the full recipe. I also plan to organise “Vietnam Day” once or twice a year – áo dài show, traditional games, and water-puppet performance. Tết is super important, so I’ll decorate the dorm with peach blossoms and invite everyone to join – that way I keep my culture alive and share it with friends from ten countries.

Do you have any questions for us?

Yes, I have two quick questions. First, what kind of support does the school provide for international students in the first three months, especially for homesickness or catching up academically? Second, many ASEAN scholars I know started research projects quite early – is there a specific teacher or programme I should look for if I want to begin a science project in Secondary 3 or 4?
